The Reach Out workshop was designed in response to the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS) and Embrace Life Council that work on suicide prevention in Nunavik/Nunavut noticing the population’s need to feel better equipped to deal with the problem of suicide.
The Reach Out workshop is a half-day workshop that increases community members’ sense of preparedness to participate in suicide prevention actions. The sessions will adopt an atmosphere of openness and sharing, even though it is not specifically a healing workshop.
Objectives:
- Reach out to the person in distress (understand the person’s state of mind; identify what to look for; ask the person if he/she is thinking about suicide with more ease; listen to the person using helpful attitudes).
- Refer the person to services (become aware of available resources; encourage the person to ask for help or accept help offered).
- Stay safe (know what to do if the person is in immediate danger; identify limits; take care of oneself during difficult times).
